A group of ex-Nokia employees have teamed up to form a company called Jolla, which will focus its efforts on reviving the MeeGo operating system. The result of a joint venture between Intel, Nokia, and Samsung, MeeGo was once — very briefly — Nokia’s smartphone software of choice, shipping on the N9, until the company abandoned it for Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform.
Clearly some of Nokia’s employees felt that MeeGo had lots of potential, because they’re giving it a second chance. Their first job, according to TechRadar, is to spread the word about MeeGo and their mission to revive it. Jolla is planning to start a website and a Facebook page, while Twitter and LinkedIn accounts are already up and running.
The biography of the Jolla team’s official Twitter account, which already has nearly 6,000 followers, reads:
“Jolla continues Nokia’s excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones together with the #N9 core professionals and #MeeGo community alumni.”
On its LinkedIn account, Jolla insists that MeeGo “deserves” to be continued, and that they “will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story.”
MeeGo was originally Nokia’s answer to Apple’s iOS operating system, and the Finnish firm had high hopes for the Linux-based platform when it was unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in 2010. However, it soon became clear that the platform wouldn’t be enough to compete with Android and iOS, and Nokia joined forces with Microsoft instead.
